This August, Kennebunk has a new restaurant, a new seafood market, and recurring community gatherings to explore. If you live nearby, it's worth knowing what's available in town this summer.

A New Table in Lower Village

Signal opened this year at 27 Western Avenue, right at that same corner, in a building that puts its patio within sight of the bridge into Kennebunkport without ever needing to cross it. The restaurant takes its name from an actual 1800s fishing schooner that sailed out of Kennebunk, a vessel known for its "endurance, precision, and exceptional catches," and the menu leans into that history with an expansive raw bar, chilled shellfish, and seafood-forward plates alongside steak. There's an indoor fireplace for the shoulder season and a full bar for right now.

What matters for a resident isn't the concept, it's the location. A raw bar with a patio and a fireplace near the bridge gives residents another dining option in Lower Village.

The same thing happened with groceries. Piscatrix, a new seafood market whose name translates to "female fishmonger," opened in Kennebunk selling fresh seafood, grab-and-go dishes, ready-to-cook meals, and pantry staples. It keeps a tighter schedule than a restaurant, open Wednesday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., which makes it a genuine weeknight option rather than a special-occasion stop. Signal offers a night out, while Piscatrix makes it easier to bring seafood home.

A Monthly Art Walk and Saturday Markets

The restaurant openings are the headline, but the recurring stuff is what actually fills a week. Three things run on a schedule worth knowing:

The Second Friday Art Walk puts gallery exhibits, open studios, live music, and tastings within walking distance of each other for two hours, which is enough time to actually do a loop rather than pick one stop and call it a night. Pair it with the Saturday combination of the Artisans Marketplace at Waterhouse Center and the Farmers Market on Garden Street, and you have a weekend structure that doesn't require a car once you're downtown. These gatherings are a short walk from a restaurant and a seafood market, adding dining options for people spending time downtown.

The Trail Challenge Has a Deadline, Even If August Doesn't

Not everything happening right now is about eating. The Tommy McNamara Trail Challenge is a joint program of the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, the Arundel Conservation Trust, and the Kennebunk Land Trust, built for kids in grades one through eight. Each participating trailhead carries a sign with a code word on the back, and kids collect the words in a nature journal as they work through the list. It's the kind of low-key summer program that's easy to forget about until the last few weeks are suddenly the only weeks left.

The challenge runs from June 5 through September 7, which means as of this writing there are roughly four weeks left on the clock. The trust is closing it out with a celebration at Emmons Preserve on September 13, where participants get recognized and receive a Klean Kanteen water bottle for finishing, along with light refreshments and family activities. If your household started this in June and let it slide, this is the actual window to finish it, not a vague end-of-summer deadline.

The trail list itself is worth knowing regardless of the challenge, because it spans ground most people drive past without registering as public land:

• Kennebunkport Conservation Trust: Brook Trail, Fox Den Trail, Learning Trail, Storybook Trail, Jeremy's Trail, Roller Trail, Batson River Trail, and the trails at Meadow Woods
• Arundel Conservation Trust: Welch Woods, the Yellow and Red Community Trails, and the Roll Um Easy Trail
• Kennebunk Land Trust: Wonder Brook Preserve Trail, For All Forever Preserve, Alewive Woods, and Tributary Preserve

That's three organizations and more than a dozen named trails covering forest, marsh, and farmland across Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Arundel, all connected by one program built specifically so kids treat this land as theirs rather than scenery they pass on the way somewhere else.
